Shopping has always been - in part - a form of entertainment, so perhaps paying for the right to do so is not unreasonable.

Springwise has an interesting article about Sample Labs in Japan. These are where market research meets shopping. Shoppers pay to belong to the labs, and in return they are able to take home a few products each time and have the ability to see new products before they are launched
